Graphics Viewing Software -- Macintosh

Netscape and Internet Explorer can be used to view figures, but graphics viewer helper applications offer options for viewing figures that are not offered by browsers. The procedures below describe how to obtain a graphics viewer and how to configure Netscape to use it to open figures.

1. Obtain JPEGView

Download JPEGView from ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Mosaic/Mac/Helpers/jpeg-view-331.hqx Double-click the program that gets downloaded onto your computer. Important: Make a note of where you install JPEGView on your computer. You will need this information in a subsequent step.

2. Configure Netscape to open figures in JPEGView

Configure Netscape to automatically use JPEGView for viewing JPEG images. To do this in Netscape:

  1. Under the Edit menu, select Preferences/Navigator/Applications.
  2. In the pop-up menu at the top of the Preferences window, select Helper Applications
  3. Scroll until you see JPEG Image and click once to select it
  4. Click on Edit, and then select the Application radio button.
  5. Click the Choose button and navigate folders/files until you're pointed at the copy of JPEGView you just installed, and select it.
  6. Click OK
  7. Click OK

When an image is opened in JPEGView, a copy is saved on your disk, usually in your System folder, requiring a considerable amount of disk space. After viewing several images, delete JPEGView documents from your hard disk to avoid shortages of disk space.
